A question about bereavement flights/fares?

My grandma passed away today and I need to fly to her funeral this week. I am unemployed and cannot afford much on a ticket. I live in Florida and I need to fly to Ohio. I looked at flights this evening and they are a lot of money because of the last minute notice. My aunt to told me to look into something called bereavement flights. Can anyone tell me about this and how I should go about finding a flight? Any tips and suggestions are welcome because I have never even heard of this concept. Thanks!

Call the airline directly. They will ask you for information like the funeral date/place etc. They will sometimes request a death certificate. I have used this once, and it was not as sky high as the online rate. I also have had great success with last minute travel deals on sites like cheap travel and travelocity.

Bereavement fares are discounted over the highest fare, so they are still usually very expensive. Call the airlines that fly the route you want and talk to a booking agent. There is no way to book bereavement fares online. Find out the name of the funeral home before you call. They will probably ask you for it.

Bereavement fares are, unfortunately and for the most part, going to be higher than any discount fares you can find online
